Dungeon Master: classic DS free RPG action

Dungeon Master (MobyGames, DM Encyclopaedia, Wikipedia) hasn't aged a day. It still is as scary, tactical, beautiful and brilliant to play as it was back in the days of the Atari ST. Only difference is that you can now play this classic classy CRPG for free on your Nintendo DS simply by following this lovely link and managing to work out how homebrew works. It still is a pre-Alpha release mind you.

  1. I downloaded this game a couple of weeks ago but ran into some problems getting it to work. You have to put the /map directory and .dat files in your root directory. But mine were corrupted, which was the problem.

I'm going to post a review of it with some other new homebrew games on Monday.

But keep in mind it's alpha: I never ran into any creatures or fights. So, there's not much gameplay . . . yet.

  2. You're absolutely right my friend. It is pre-Aplpha indeed, but quite a promising idea.

Btw, have you heard of the official NDS homebrew thingy rumours?

  3. Yes, I have, which I sort of blogged about. First, it starts with the rumor that the Wii can be used as a DS download station with a forthcoming software upgrade.

Then, comes along the rumor of being able to buy and download Game Boy games to your DS.

To do that, the DS needs to be able to save the games to a cart rather than to the DS's memory, hence the rumor of an official Nintendo slot 1 cart.

Who knows what this might mean . . . I think a lot of us DS owners would love to see something akin to a Wiiware channel for the DS: you could buy and download games developed by indie developers. But, for that to happen, Nintendo would probably have to release a DS SDK, much like the Wii SDK. But would developers pony any kind of money when they have libraries that are currently free?

The next year could be very interesting for the DS and homebrew (DSware?).
