The Neverhood Mobile

The Neverhood was first released back in 1996 for the PC and, despite being a spectacular claymaytion adventure game, it sadly flopped; baddly. Even though it featured beautiful visuals by Doug TenNapel of Earthworm Jim fame, an imaginative world, interesting puzzles and a most excellent story, it seems that gamers back then were simply oblivious to adventures. Oh, well...

On the happier side of things, The Neverhood is apparently going mobile and will sooner or later be hitting iPhones, Android phones, iPads and even Windows phones. Then again, nobody knows whether more platforms will follow. Anyway. You can find out more about the The Neverhood Mobile over at its facebook page and via twitter.

The AVGN / Cinemassacre IPhone App

The Angry Video Game Nerd (TM, I suppose) isn't the funniest online persona ever, though he definitely knows his retro games (also horror movies and board games) and has been enlightening the gaming masses for quite some time now. You can watch all of his videos over at Cinemassacre. 

Oh, and the pretty smart Cinemassacre Videos App has just been released and will let you watch hours of AVGN vids on the go, provided of course you own some sort of iDevice. Grab it via the App Store. It seems rather interesting:

Tales of Monkey Island HD ep.1 for Free!

iPad gamers that want to play one of the best adventure games recently released for free should better hurry, for the first episode of the excellent Tales of Monkey Island HD will only be free for less than 24 hours. Follow the link to the App Store and prepare for the lovely introduction to the latest adventures of Guybrush. Oh, and I strongly suggest grabbing the rest of the episodes too; the series only gets better until it reaches it climatic finale.

P1XL Party released (iOS)

I do love retro-styled pixel art and I do love mini-games on the go, and that's why I'm pretty sure I'll love P1XL Party. It has been just made available for your iPhone and iPod Touch, and comes with three lovely retro inspired games: Splatform (a platformer), Wanderers (an action RPG), and Marz (a shmup). Future free updates, that are already in development, will include more classic genres such as puzzle, racing and strategy.

Avadon: The Black Fortress HD

Apparently developers have seen into my mind and understood that sprawling, isometric, rather traditional and particularly old-school CRPGs are a perfect fit for the iPad. Avadon: The Black Fortress HD -episode 1- is exactly this kind of game and -just to make sure the hardcore trust its hardcoriness- it's a port of the proper, mouse-driven PC version of the game; the same you can grab a demo of here. To grab the iPad version, well, I suppose this is the link you'll be needing.

Cave Story - Doukutsu Monogatari (Wiz)

I knew that Cave Story had to be available for the Wiz and I was apparently right. Studio Pixel's freeware platformer can now be freely downloaded here. If you haven't played it yet, know that you've been missing out on a true masterpiece with excellent pixel-art graphics, solid controls, tons of new ideas, deep gameplay mechanics and even a great plot.

Time Gentlemen Please

Time Gentlemen Please is a great and absolutely hilarious adventure, that, judging from the video above, is this close to becoming fully playable on your (Windows) phone too. You can find out more about TGP mobile here and play the original game here.

The new and improved Free-App Hero

Apple's App Store is filled to the brim with thousands of free, lite, freemium and freeware apps (and of course games); not surprisingly more than a few are a waste of time, while some could be considered downright insulting. It would be lovely knowing what to download, wouldn't it? Even better if someone let you know of each and every commercial app... gone free Enter Stuart Campbell, legendary game reviewer and co-creator of Cannon Fodder 2, and his excellent Free-App Hero, that has already helped us chose the very best (always handpicked) from what's on offer. 

Happily, this excellent app has further evolved and matured into the just-released and even more impressive Free-App Hero 2.0. The new version, available both as a free/lite download and as a paid app, now supports multitasking, cached lists and a variety of other enhancements and extras. Ring Blade for free!

We all love iPhone freebies don't we? Especially when they are innovative, beautiful and downright frantic shooters that have only recently gone freeware. Just like the rather brilliant Ring Blade apparently. It's an impressively polished offering and you'll simply have to grab it. No, really.

Sheep Goes Left (iOS)

Indie games are amazing for more than one reasons, but I'm pretty sure the fact that they may even let you help sheep walk casually to the left is definitely one of the more important; what's more, that's exactly what Sheep Goes Left promises to let iOS gamers do. It's a simple, elegant, brand new and retro-looking game that can be grabbed for your iDevice. It impressively features 100 screens/levels and you can find out more about it over here. 

Flashback (iPhone)

Manomio, the excellent retro-focused indie developers that have already given the iOS crowd the best Commodore 64 emulator one could hope for (here it is), have also released a truly amazing version of the classic 2D, cyberpunk, sprawling arcade-adventure Flashback. Yes, the same game that set the Amiga and the Genesis/Megadrive ablaze back in the day is now (well, for quite some time actually) available in all its sci-fi glory on your iPhone. What's more it's now available for cheaper than ever. Get it!

Retro Sega Game Gear Commercials

Great, now I'll have to pay eBay a visit and grab myself a SEGA Game Gear. The old Lynx - Game Gear rivalry is after all long dead and my Lynx collection wont complain.

Compulse for free (iOS)

Compulse, a lovely, original, physics-based and rather popular flash game, has been ported to iOS and is thus available for you iPhone, iPod and/or iPad. Oh, and yes, it's happily available for free. Get it here. It's good; really good.

The PlayStation Vita

Formerly know as the NGP, the PS Vita name was announced yesterday over at that posh and at times really boring thing that is the E3. It will apparently be both very decently priced -especially in the USA where the price for the WiFi model will be $249- and a true successor to the Atari Lynx. Sony, you see, has wisely decided not to pit Vita against iOS devices, but instead market it as a hefty yet highly portable alternative to proper consoles. I quite love what I'm seeing. Have a look at this now: 

Curse of Monkey Island - GameBoy

Well, not really, no, but at least the lovely pics above do prove that The Curse of Monkey Island could look both amazing and be elegantly functional as a Game Boy demake. Provided it were incredibly short that is... Anyway. See the complete set here.

Zelda Ocarina of Time 3DS

The 3DS hasn't done that great so far and the global financial crisis isn't solely responsible for this; it's aided by a distinct lack of top-quality games. Apparently, the forthcoming full-3D update of Zelda Ocarina of Time will try and fill that void and become the killer-app Nintendo has been hoping for. Truth be said the trailers so-far released do look brilliant:

TurboGrafx-16 GameBox (iOS)

Hudson's TurboGrafx-16 GameBox is a free to download iOS app, that will let you demo, purchase and play some of the best games the eponymous console had to offer, including such masterpieces as Bomberman '94, Gradius, Devil's Crush and Bonk's Adventure. What really matters though is that the latest update has added Raiden to the available games. Yes, Raiden! My all time favourite scrolling shoot-em-up and the game that ate the vast percentage of my childhood coins. Here's TurboGrafx-16 GameBox on the App Store. You owe it to yourself to at least try it; it wont cost you a thing.
