XtenDS: Nintendo DS homebrew made easy

I wont say I actually tried fiddling with XtenDS, but I'm pretty sure you more enthusiastic homebrew game developers would probably like to give it a try, what with your rampant creativity and all that free time. After all XtenDS seems to be an incredibly easy to use program and a mostly free (shareware actually) game creator with an apparently sleek interface. You can download a copy here and perhaps let us know if it really is worth the effort.

  1. I tried an earlier version that was so limited that I didn't see why it was even released. With the new version, it's hard to see improvements. The app includes no online help for getting started, though there is something of a PDF doc on the website. However, for beginners, it's not a lot of help. A tutorial for creating a simple game would be a good addition. The free version includes 25 actions spead out among sprites, backgrounds, control, etc. The $5 version adds 25 more actions. A question is how much of a game can you really create with the free version. Still it seems better than what I looked at back in October. I just think that non-programmers will be somewhat frustrated.

I think the idea for XtenDS is great: a kind of Gamemaker for the DS.

  3. Hmm... Looks like a little "ripoff" from Game Maker 7. At least in some some ways, but not in all ways. Maybe I should try, I'll see about that ;)
