The quite amazing Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo 3DSIt's been less than 24 hours since Nintendo unveiled its promised 3D handheld and, judging from what we've seen, this could easily be the company's best handheld yet. The 3DS, you see, is backward compatible with the DS and DSi, sports PS2 level graphics, an allegedly jaw dropping 3D display, carts than can hold up to 2GB of data, dual screens, wi-fi, a 3D camera, an second inner camera, an analog stick, a few extra buttons, the now-traditional touch-controls and some interesting sounding motion sensors. Feature-packed, I'm sure you'll agree, and it looks good and highly portable too.

What's more, the number and -probably- quality of promised first and third party games is more than impressive, ranging from the already shown Kid Icarus: Uprising to Street Fighter IV. Other titles announced include: Metal Gear 3DS, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart, Paper Mario, Pilotwings, Star Fox, Fifa Soccer, Ninja Gaiden, DJ Hero, Resident Evil, Sonic, Contra, Assassin's Creed, The Sims 3, Animal Crossing, Professor Layton, Pro Evolution Soccer, Bomberman and many more, as apparently everyone seems to be supporting the thing.

  1. It was only a year ago that I purchased my first ever handheld game machine (that being my lovely little DS Lite) and already I am thinking about buying either one of these (when they come out) or a Wiz.

This really does sound cool though!

  2. I myself am drooling over this, something that has not happened to me for a long time when it comes to consoles.

If they have solid start line-up, I will be an early adopter, I'm afraid.

  3. @ Ben 304: Actually, the Wiz is and will probably remain my current fav handheld. It's brilliant, retro and adventure friendly, and doesn't cost a fortune to enjoy.

@Barts: Early adoption is out of the question I'm afraid. Then again, drooling is mandatory. It is the most exciting release since the Wii.

  4. And what more reccomendations could one ask for, my good man?

Perhaps once I have myself in a position where I can allow enough happy spending to acquire one I'll do so and see what the joy is all about!

  5. Mind you, you can't imagine how beautiful 320x200 graphics can look on the little bright screen of the Wiz. I replayed Monkey Island 1 just to enjoy the looks of it.

Oh, and I suggest you wait, as I wouldn't be surprised if the Wiz price dropped sometime soon.

  6. "you can't imagine how beautiful 320x200 graphics can look on the little bright screen "

So true. I played some games on my PSP, because they looked so pretty on it, especially with a bit of filtering. All GBA games look great with their vivid colour palette, Silmarils' classics didn't scare with huge pixels, instead becoming small pieces of art, and Final Fantasy VI from SNES was just brilliant.

I guess the same applies to Wiz with an added bonus of being able to play Amiga games (seriously, I am somewhat jealous about it!).

  7. And wit till you see it running Neo Geo games. Absolutely amazing.

  8. There is only one problem with it - the screen is only 2.8", while PSP's was 4.3". For someone with eyes as weak as mine this is, unfortunately, a drawback.

  9. A price drop would be a most lovely thing indeed.

Neo Geo games are, in general, a thing of absolute undeniable beauty as it is, so I can hardly dispute this. I am interested, is there a list anywhere of games one can play on the Wiz? I hear that it is quite good at emulation, but exactly how many games one can play on it after purchasing it is something I remain quite unsure about.

  10. Well, from what I've tried, all ZX Spectrum, Genesis/Megadrive, SNES and Atari 2600 run brilliantly. Almost 90% percent of Amiga and Neo Geo software runs without any problems whatsoever, and every 320x200 adventure works brilliantly via ScummVM. Haven't tried any PC emulation though.

  11. My word, that does seem like a LOT of gaming for very little money, really...

  12. It actually is. And there are quite a few decent freeware indie games too, though I'd really love a decent C64 emulator.
