The Wasted Land Competition
Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land is one of the very best iOS games fullstop. It's deep, smart, challenging, polished, good-looking, expertly crafted and filled with those lovable Lovecraftian horrors we've all learned to appreciate. It's also a great strategy game too and one that has been developed for both iPad and iPhone, but that's beyond the point of this post.
What I actually wanted to let you know is that Red Wasp Design, the developers responsible for the game, have started a brilliant competition, that will let you win an astounding and very physical 1936 copy of the Astounding Stories magazine. It's a pretty special issue too, as it does actually feature part of the Mountains of Madness. Find out more here.

The portable Midway Arcade
Not that iPhone and iPad gamers have been starved for retro offerings, but I really felt I had to let you know about the freshly released Midway Arcade dears. It is after all a cheap way to grab ten classic arcade games (including Spy Hunter, Rampage, Tapper, Arch Rivals, Defender and Joust) on the cheap, while having the option to grab even more as in-app purchases. Definitely worth a look methinks.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out
Someone must have told EA that freemium games on mobile platforms can make a ton of money and that powerful behemoth of gaming seems to have actually decided to test the theory; in the most impressive way possible... Thus The Simpsons: Tapped Out was born and will soon be hitting iPhones and iPads worldwide, only to be followed by an Android version.
The game will sport a variety of quests, more than a few levels and unlockable characters, and what seem like some truly authentic graphics. You can find out more about it over at C|Net.

Asterix & Obelix (Android)
Asterix & Obelix is a freeware app for Android, that has been lovingly developed by two graduate students as an experiment of sorts. It is, thus, an interesting, freeware jump-and-run game with lovely graphics and something you should download from this place.

The Double Fine Adventure
Chances are you've probably heard of Double Fine's adventure game by now. Oh, come on... It's a huge Kickstarter success, a 2D adventure game that will be designed by Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert and, most probably, the game of the decade. Hmmm... alright. Just watch the video above and all will be clear. See?
Importantly, the game will also be appearing on iOS and Android too.

A Clockwork Brain for iOS
A smart, beautiful, highly polished collection of mini games that can be expanded via in-app purchases? Why, yes please. And thank you so much oh newly released Clockwork Brain. Your steampunk aesthetics and brain-sharpening games seem to have done the trick. Oh, and I see you've been developed for both the iPhone and the iPad. And are free to grab too! How lovely.

SpaceCHem Mobile for iPad
SpaceChem is one of those brave indie games that dared to be both incredibly unique and very smart at the same time. Happily, it has gotten itself glowing reviews for both its PC and Mac version; must have been the brilliant design-based gameplay combined with the fighting of monsters in the name of science methinks...
SpaceChem has also been made available for iPad on the App Store and is apparently currently being heavily discounted. Better hurry and download it. Rumour has it it's on par with the PC version!

DONKEY.BAS on iOS
It's amazing what you can find and pay for these days on the App Store, but DONKEY.BAS is both unexpected and unique. It is after all a post of something truly retro: one of the first, CGA games for MS-DOS and a much-loved BASIC offering.

AWESOME Land is Super
If you were looking for an incredibly well designed and visually stunning parody of Mario Land, well, look no further. AWESOME Land is all you could ask for and more, as it kindly is equal parts homage and equal parts well-meant parody. Also, it plays great and offers 20 whole levels. Grab it over at the App Store for your iPhone and iPad.

The Hacker (iOS)
Uplink, the very best hacking game ever released, would admittedly have been far too complex for gaming on a mobile phone and would definitely not have been ideal for short gaming bursts of 10 or even 5 minutes. Happily though gamers interested in a hacking game with a strong atmosphere can now enjoy The Hacker on their iPhone or iPod Touch. A truly fantastic alternative.
It only costs $0.99, sports some excellent 80s computing inspired graphics and a ton of smart hacking mini-games, and is easily one of the fresher games on the App Store. You should really give it a try methinks, if only to play around with its gloriously retro-esque GUI.

The Sky Is Falling
We knew this would eventually happen and even Asterix feared the moment, but, well, the sky is finally falling and I can't help but feel pretty much excited about it. The Sky Is Falling, you see, is the latest release by indie gaming and retro remaking heroes Ovine by Design. Yes, Ovine, the same group that has already given us such freeware gems as Ultimate Bruce Lee, Rosslyn Chapel and the Dan Dare remake, has gone and released their brand new game for iOS and Android. And at less than $1.00 it's still practically free.
The Sky Is Falling is a beautiful retro-inspired offering that requires reflexes and quick thinking. You can (and should) either grab the iPhone version or the Android version. Oh, and here's the trailer:
