Kung Food (Atari Lynx)

A lovely video review of a not-so-lovely (but definitely weird) retro offering for the Atari Lynx.

The new Neo Geo Pocket

Today's brilliant retro gaming news is that we will soon be getting a brand new Neo Geo Pocket; a handheld console that's officially sponsored by SNK Playmore and is temporarily known as the Neo Geo Portable Device. Not the most inspired of names apparently, but we should be expecting a name change soon. According to Adriansang.com, that is.

The console will apparently sport a shiny 4.3" screen, 2 gigas of internal storage, all the face and shoulder buttons a gamer could ask for and what seems like a most interesting (possibly analog) d-pad. It will also come preloaded with 20 Neo Geo arcade classics such as Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown, King of Fighters '94, Last Resort, Art of Fighting, NAM 1975 and Super Sidekicks.

The history of Game & Watch

Interested in finding out more on the history of Nintendo's Game & Watch series? Of course you are, and that's why I'll simply point you over at Club Nintendo where all your questions will (most probably and provided they are G&W centered) be answered. Enjoy.

How to emulate the Atari Lynx

Seeing as the Atari Lynx has yet to get a decent emulator on iOS and WiZ, I do believe that the best way to enjoy the games of this classic handheld would be on the comfort of your PC. Or Mac. Or even Amiga. And the very best Lynx emulator is none other than the excellent Handy Lynx. You can download the Windows version here, the Mac version here and the Amiga one here. Oh, and as you'll also be needing the Atari Lynx BIOS ROM, you'd better grab it the direct download way. Everything is freeware, mind.

To grab some game ROMS, you should go on and download them over at the glorious Atari Age site. I suggest you start off with Chip's Challenge, Blue Lightning, Ninja Gaiden, Toki and Shadow of the Beast. Finally, here's a tutorial; you know, just to make sure.

The Gamate Video Review

By Ashens none the less, and should you feel like you could find out more about this obscure and not exactly brilliant console, well, do have a look at this old GotG Gamate piece.

Pixel Galaxy: A GameBoy Celebration

Meant to post about the forthcoming Pixel Galaxy book ever since I read about it over at the ever-vigilant GameSetWatch, but, well, a windy summer can do strange things apparently... Anyway, the good news is that Pixel Galaxy is an upcoming art book focusing on the excellent black & white art that graced the screen of the Nintendo Game Boy. You can get a closer look at it right here. And, yes, it really does look beautiful.

The decline of the Game Boy

Ever wanted to find out the exact manner of the Game Boy's death? The role of Pokemon in temporarily saving it? How shovelware swamped the system perhaps? Well, you 'd better have a read about the decline of the Game Boy then. It's pretty lovely and definitely enlightening.

Retro Sega Game Gear Commercials

Great, now I'll have to pay eBay a visit and grab myself a SEGA Game Gear. The old Lynx - Game Gear rivalry is after all long dead and my Lynx collection wont complain.

Curse of Monkey Island - GameBoy

Well, not really, no, but at least the lovely pics above do prove that The Curse of Monkey Island could look both amazing and be elegantly functional as a Game Boy demake. Provided it were incredibly short that is... Anyway. See the complete set here.

Custom Batman Returns Lynx

Excellent gaming blog Game Set Watch just discovered an astonishingly beautiful Atari Lynx and, well, Gaming on the Go is very happy indeed. It is after all a luxuriant and quite sizable Lynx Mark I that sports top quality custom artwork based on the  Batman Returns game. You can see more pictures of the thing over at Oskunk's blog.

Wonderswan Color Emulator

The Wonderswan and the Wonderswan Color didn't set the handheld gaming world on fire, though they probably should have. They were excellent consoles, with more than a few great games and an incredibly sensible price-tag. What's more, you can now find out what all the fuss was about on your PC and Win CE machine with the help of the excellent, freeware Cygne emulator.

A Virtual Boy Promo Video

Well, it certainly wasn't the most successful 3D game for a 3D world, but Nintendo's Virtual Boy was a rather unique and interesting console, that tried to popularize full-3D gaming a tad to early. Now, while we're waiting to see how the 3DS faires, why not have a look at the promo video posted above?

Game Gear games on the 3DS

Apparently, Sega plans to release some of its classic Game Gear games for the Virtual Console of the 3DS, bringing some mostly overlook handheld classics to the modern gaming masses. The first games to hit the service will include Sonic and Tales 2, Sonic Drift 2, the brilliant GG Shinobi and Columns. Hopefully, we'll see some Lynx games there too.

The Game Boy Oscilloscope

Oscilloscopes, those beautifully arcane display devices, have been with gaming from the very beginning of its history. Though Tennis for Two isn't the hottest digital offering of our age, the oscilloscope that joystiq discovered is way more interesting. It can actually display GameBoy games, while being both utterly impressive and definitely not portable. Here, have a look at the video:

L.E.D. Football Free Weekend

I don't need no stinking iPhone, but truth be said I would quite like to own one. There's all this retro love for the thing I'm more than jealous. Anyway; good news everyone! If you hurry you'll be able to get three excellent iOS remakes of Mattel's classic LED-based handhelds for free. Just follow these links to LED Football, LED Football 2 and LED Basketball 78 and smile smiles of nostalgia.

The Game & Watch remakes

Donkey Kong Jr Game & Watch

It's been quite sometime since I started enjoying those old Game & Watch LCD handhelds by Nintendo, and I must admit to being absolutely startled at the sheer playability and addictiveness of those rather ancient handhelds. Though I could suggest you have a look over at eBay in order to grab a couple, I'm quite aware of their, well, rather inflated prices, and this is the reason why I will suggest you visit Handheld Remakes instead.

There, you will find excellent simulated versions of some of the best Game & Watch games, that -though not particularly portable- have lost nothing in the translation. What's more, those remakes are far from restricted to Nintendo's early games. You'll find a ton of Mattel, Bandai, Tiger etc stuff to help you waste your time in a most pleasant way. Enjoy.
